E. LaVerne Manos, DNP, RN-BC, has been awarded a 3-year, $998,006 grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services to focus on developing an interprofessional, collaborative practice model within an acute care pediatric unit at The University of Kansas Hospital. Read More
Nancy Dunton, PhD, FAAN, has been awarded the Research Mentor Award by the AcademyHealth organization's Interdisciplinary Research Group on Nursing Issues. This award recognizes Dr. Dunton's contributions, as a senior scientist, to the career development of young investigators who are engaged in research focused on interdisciplinary health services research on nursing issues. The mission of this group is to support the development of health services research that focuses on nursing practice, workforce and delivery of care.
Congratulations!Carol Smith, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor at the KU School of Nursing was inducted into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame on Thursday, August 2, in Brisbane Australia. Among other things, Sigma Theta Tau considers "integrated scholarship in the researcher's area of specialty and a significant and sustained level of achievement in nursing research which has had broad national and/or international impact on the profession, patients, families, community or policy." How a Robotic Baby Helps Students Train for Real-life Situations

Registered nurses with an associate degree in nursing from Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan., can now continue their training and earn bachelor of science in nursing degrees at the University of Kansas School of Nursing, thanks to a new agreement between KU and Butler. Full release
The University of Kansas School of Nursing Honors BSN graduates presented their final research projects to an audience of fellow students, faculty and guests in Reike Auditorium on April 30, 2012. Each of the eleven honors students completed a research project, working with a faculty mentor over their senior year. These projects ranged from "Effects of Intravenous Coenzyme Q10 Following Hemorrhagic Shock" to "Is there an App for That? A review of Apps for Adults with Special Needs." Geri Neuberger, RN, EdD is the coordinator of the BSN Honors Program.

Each year, students in the School of Nursing’s Bachelor of Science program are nominated by faculty members for their excellence in clinical practice. The “Clinical Excellence Awards” for 2011-12 were presented by Dean Karen Miller, RN, PhD, FAAN, on April 2 at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Level II awards were presented to the following outstanding students in nursing of adults, pediatric nursing, or mental health nursing:
Level III awards went to these students for excellence in critical care nursing or population-based care:
Special Recognition as Clinical Excellence Award at Level I, Level II and Level III was awarded to Franny McShane and Amy Penny.
On Aug. 19, the KU School of Nursing hosted its inaugural Nightingale Ceremony for incoming undergraduate students. The purpose of the event, which was generously underwritten by the Kansas University Nurses Alumni Association, was to instill the history and significance of the profession of nursing in the School’s newest members.
Each of the 104 new students recited an Oath of Commitment and was welcomed into one of four Academic Societies, which were named in honor of luminaries of the School: Pearl Laptad, S. Milo Hinch, Henrietta Froehlke, E. Jean M. Hill. Students also received copies of Florence Nightingale’s Notes on Nursing and a customized pin commemorating Academic Society membership.
Plans call for the ceremony to be held at the beginning of each academic year. Along with the School of Nursing, both the KU School of Medicine and the KU School of Pharmacy hold annual transitional ceremonies that mark entrance to those respective health professions.

Sharon Kumm, RN, MN, CCRN, University of Kansas School of Nursing associate professor, was recently appointed as the School’s ambassador with the National League for Nursing (NLN). Her term will run May 2011 through April 2013. Kumm has been with the KU School of Nursing since 1992. more
